Lainey Schooltree is a Boston-based composer, vaudeville performer, producer of live shows, multi-instrumentalist, comedian, and audio producer/engineer. Over the past several years she’s acquired mad skillz in the creation and execution of art, becoming a DIY ninja in the underground arts community of Boston. She’s also been known to do some puppeteering and burlesque as well, though usually not at the same time.
For the past two years Schooltree has focused on writing and producing Heterotopia, a rock opera, for which she wrote both the libretto and music. [Malden-based producer & composer Peter Moore, of Palace of Purpose Studio, helped produce the Heterotopia recording. Note: Peter Moore has also appeared on Inside Malden.]
Schooltree has been written up in The Boston Globe, The Herald, The Weekly Dig, The Boston Metro, The Boston Phoenix, The Noise Boston, Northeast Performer Magazine, Comedian Magazine (NYC), Somerville Times, Worcester Magazine, The Worcester Telegram and Gazette, Black Canvas, and other local publications.
Though not present for the panel discussion due to sickness, her spirit pervaded the occasion with her experiences and success. She also contributed excerpts of her rock opera Heterotopia to the podcast and offers her insights into arts and crowd funding. She has received very favorable thumbs up ratings for the recording of Heterotopia. Shortly before the live performance at Oberon, Amelia Mason of WBUR’S ARTery wrote an article that describes Schooltree’s journey with Heterotopia in greater detail. It was as Mason quotes Schooltree saying,
“We’re putting something out there that there may be no demand for,” Schooltree says. “But then when you look deeper, maybe this is what is actually needed. The kind of thing that’s needed is artists trying to put something out there that is their own search for meaning, [and that is] about a search for meaning. And maybe meaning is a thing that is missing.”
